Official IBO2020 International Volunteer Application

Updated: Oct 1, 2019

We at the IBO2020 office were thrilled with the response we received to the international volunteer interest form! The level of passion and interest in IBO that was demonstrated was very inspiring, and shows what a special and motivated group of people the IBO community is. Thank you to all of you who submitted an interest form!

Now that we’ve been able to gauge the level of interest in international volunteer opportunities, we are happy to release our official application form for IBO2020 international volunteers. We will select slightly more than 60 international volunteers to work alongside our Japanese college student volunteers. The vast majority of these opportunities will be for team guides, although some applicants may have the chance to contribute to other aspects of our event organization, depending on applicant experience and interest.

So, what are we looking for in our international volunteers? Here are a few of the factors we are taking into consideration:

  • Interest, experience, and passion for IBO (or other olympiads and science competitions): We consider this a very important factor! When asked why you’d like to volunteer for IBO on the application, please use that opportunity to demonstrate this to us.

  • Reliability and Punctuality: Submitting your application on time (or early!) is an excellent way to demonstrate your reliability to us. Those who do not submit on time will not be considered for a volunteer position.

  • Ability to commit to IBO2020’s schedule and fund your own plane ticket: Volunteers will need to be at the IBO2020 venue from approximately July 1st for training (official date not set yet) until the end of the event on the 11th. Unfortunately, we cannot offer any funding for your transportation or flights to and from the IBO2020 venue. As such, volunteers must be able to fund their own tickets. Housing, food, and transportation during the event and training will be covered by IBO.

  • Communication and Language Skills: Volunteers should be comfortable communicating and giving instructions in English. Speaking multiple languages is a plus (particularly Japanese!), but not mandatory. What is most important is your ability and comfort communicating with a diverse group of people in an international setting.

Here is a timeline of what you can expect during the application process:

Application Timeline:

Application Launch: September 30th, 2019

Application Deadline: 11:59 PM (UTC), October 31st, 2019 (But it is always good to be early!)

Applicants Notified If They Will Receive Online Interview: within 2 weeks of application

Additional information may be requested following online interviews and prior to the final

We are very lucky to have many former volunteers and competitors interested in volunteering for IBO2020. As such, once our group of international volunteers is selected, we are looking forward to soliciting feedback and learning from your previous IBO experiences to make IBO2020 the best it can be. In the meantime, please let us know if you have any questions by emailing ibo2020@jsf.or.jp.
